Romeo Dentist Explains Veneers
You smile is one of the first things people see. Some people are just not content with how their smile looks because of the chips or cracks in teeth, uneven teeth, spaces between teeth, or even discoloration. Sometimes, it could seem that the smile you want exists only in your dreams. But the truth is, with veneers, the smile you need will no longer have to be a dream.
What are veneers?
You may or may not have been aware of veneers. A veneer is a thin piece of porcelain that is placed on top of the natural tooth. The veneer gives you the overall look you’d like and adds a small amount of strength to the teeth. A meeting with your dentist along with a smile analysis will help you check if a veneer is the proper procedure to reach your desired results. Whenever the decision has been made, you are well on the way to a fabulous smile.
Application of veneers
The application of a veneer is really a two appointment process. Your first appointment will involve trimming your teeth and developing a mold. Trimming of the teeth means that a thin layer of your enamel (under a millimeter) is going to be removed; this technique is needed for the veneer to be properly applied to your tooth and for the veneer to fit correctly into your mouth. A mold of the teeth must be taken so that the veneer can be constructed to fit. Also during this appointment, the color of your veneer is chosen by you and your dentist. As soon as the impressions have been created your dentist sends them out to be finished, this procedure typically takes a couple of weeks.
At the second scheduled visit, you dentist will prepare your tooth for the bonding of the veneer. A dental cement is placed on to the surface of your tooth and the veneer is put into place. A special light is used to “cure” the dental cement. When the veneer is bonded in its place, your dentist will clean up any extra cement and polish the new veneer.
A third, follow-up appointment is common for your dentist to talk with you on overall happiness with the feel and look and to also check for any problems.
Top reasons to get veneers
Everyone’s smile is unique and there are several cosmetic reasons people get veneers. Popular reasons for veneers are:
- Replacing chips or cracks
- Filling in spaces
- Straightening jagged teeth
- Lightening stained teeth
Benefits of veneers
Veneers are shaped for each person so it will be extremely tough to tell the difference between real teeth and those covered with a veneer due to the translucency of the porcelain being similar to the translucency of tooth enamel. Additionally, they require less enamel to be removed than a crown. Discolorations from coffee or tea will no longer be something you need to be concerned about and there is no special care needed for them, just normal brushing and flossing with regular visits to your dentist.
A porcelain veneer is expected to last around 15 years.
